Bass N’ BBQ to Benefit William Newton Hospital, Now Taking Entries

Apr 21, 2025

Registration is open for the second Bass N' BBQ bass fishing tournament, BBQ competition, and kids' fishing derby on Saturday, May 10. Hosted by the William Newton Hospital Auxiliary and Winfield City Lake, all proceeds will benefit the hospital.

“The City of Winfield is proud to co-host this event,” remarked Taggart Wall, City of Winfield manager. “We encourage our area community members to join for the fishing and BBQ—but more than that, for the good of rural healthcare in our surrounding communities.”

Bass N’ BBQ creator and chairperson Brittney Shaffer, William Newton Hospital director of volunteers, is excited to bring this event back to the community.

“William Newton Hospital Auxiliary is happy to continue this fun outdoor event. We hope it will continue to grow and become a new tradition for our hospital fundraising efforts,” said Shaffer. “Bass N’ BBQ isn’t just for adults. With the kids’ fishing derby and BBQ tasting, the whole family can join.”

Bass Tournament

Tournament check-in and live well checks for the bass fishing tournament begin at 6:00 a.m. with the first cast at 7:00 a.m. Weigh-in starts at 1:00 p.m. with awards to follow. BBQ Competition

Patrick Fromm, CDM, CFPP, William Newton Hospital director of food and nutritional services, is heading up the BBQ competition.

“It’s a great way to spend your day and test your skills,” asserts Fromm. “Entries from our first year were all good, with many different types of BBQ. Plus, you get to support your local hospital.”

Encouraging families to enjoy the scenic views at Winfield City Lake, the kids' fishing derby welcomes those ages 12 and under.
