Health Professionals of Winfield Welcomes New Physician

Sep 04, 2024

On September 9, Michelle Mitchell, MD will begin practicing at Health Professionals of Winfield. Mitchell is a family medicine physician and will see patients of all ages.

“Dr. Mitchell has distinguished herself as a highly valued and trusted physician within our community, earning the respect and confidence of her patients through dedication and compassion,” says William Newton Hospital Chief Executive Officer Brian Barta, CPA. “We are thrilled she has chosen to join Health Professionals of Winfield, where she will continue to deliver the high-quality, personalized care our patients have come to know and appreciate. Dr. Mitchell’s commitment to excellence in patient care perfectly aligns with our mission to meet the evolving needs of our community, and we are excited to support her in this new chapter of her practice.”

Mitchell, board-certified in family medicine, is becoming a familiar face in the Winfield area. She began seeing patients at Community Health Center in Cowley County in February 2022. Mitchell has been an active medical staff member at William Newton Hospital since moving to the area in 2022.

After receiving her bachelor of arts in biology at Case Western Reserve University, Mitchell completed her medical training at the University of Toledo College of Medicine, formerly the Medical College of Ohio. Her family medicine residency was at the University of Hawaii, where she served as chief resident.

Mitchell’s professional experience includes medical director at Yukio Okutsu State Veterans Home, assistant clinical professor at John A. Burns School of Medicine at the University of Hawaii, co-founder, sole owner, and president of Hawaii Family Health, Inc., a rural primary care clinic in Hilo, HI, and telehealth provider for MyVirtualPhysician and PlushCare. She has also served as clinical preceptor and clinical intern supervisor for universities in Arizona, Arkansas, Minnesota, Hawaii, and Missouri.

Mitchell says she enjoys building long-term relationships with her patients and looks forward to focusing on both their short and long-term health goals.

“I've always wanted to practice rural medicine,” she shared. “People choosing to live in rural areas deserve high-quality medical care; I am really proud to be part of the incredible medical team here in Winfield.”

In her spare time, you can find her walking around town with her dog, Peaches, as they work towards a therapy dog certification.

In addition to her professional experience, she has participated in a medical billing training program and completed a complementary medicine elective exploring acupuncture, massage therapy, and herbal therapies. She is also an avid public speaker, having served as keynote speaker for the League of Women Voters Centennial Celebration, participating in the Hawaii Health Workforce Summit, and discussing the Hawaii physician shortage as part of a televised PBS program.

Open since 2003, Health Professionals of Winfield is a rural health clinic owned and operated by William Newton Hospital. The practice is located at the Physicians Pavilion, 1230 E. Sixth Ave., Suite 1B.

At Health Professionals of Winfield, Mitchell will see patients regularly, alternating between Monday-Tuesday one week and Wednesday-Friday the next week. When not at HPW, she will also work at Fredonia Regional Hospital and clinic.

Mitchell will be working alongside internal medicine physician Sapna Shah-Haque, MD, and advanced practice providers, Kimberley Adams-McDarty, Angela Johnson, and Laura Thielen. Health Professionals of Winfield sees patients for general health needs, prevention and wellness, immunizations, diagnostic testing, fracture/injury care, occupational medicine, physicals, and more.
