Patient Finds Relief from Pain with Interventional Radiology

Following a car accident and a subsequent fall, Winfield’s Elizabeth Vaughan was experiencing what she described as “horrible pain” in her back. Vaughan tried to remedy her discomfort by working with William Newton Hospital physical therapist Julie Ross. But the pain was too unbearable, even for therapy. Like most people, Vaughan was unfamiliar with interventional radiology as a field of medicine.

Interventional radiologists perform various minimally invasive procedures through small incisions in the body using medical imaging guidance. These procedures offer reduced risk, less pain, and shorter recovery times.

In October 2020, William Newton Interventional Radiology began offering clinic visits at the Winfield Healthcare Center and procedures at the H. L. Snyder Medical Foundation Surgery Center. Using the new catheterization lab, board certified interventional radiologists treat kidneys, veins, arteries, and other organs, and perform other interventional procedures.

Dr. Kumar Reddy is the practice’s primary physician, with Dr. Nicholas Brewer and Dr. Robert Schmaltz providing support. Services offered include: nephro-renal angioplasty/stenting, visceral angioplasty/stenting, peripheral angioplasty/stenting (primarily cardiology), fistulagram, vena cava filters, transhepatic cholangiogram, transhepatic biliary drainage, kyphoplasty, dialysis access management, nephrostomy, G/J-tube replacement, angiography, and arthrogram, along with other procedures on a case-by-case basis with consultation.

After her clinic visit with Dr. Reddy, Vaughan was scheduled for a kyphoplasty in the surgery center, a procedure filling an injured or collapsed vertebra to relieve pain from spinal compression.

“The procedure was EASY! The hardest part was getting on the table and staying still,” Vaughan described. Three weeks post-procedure, Vaughan is “so happy” with the results and reports no pain except when she moves a certain way.

“Dr. Reddy was hugely informative, and made sure I knew everything about everything. He did not treat me like a ‘little old lady.’”

As in Vaughan’s case, kyphoplasty has been the most common procedure performed to date in Winfield. However, interventional radiologists can treat a variety of medical problems, all while keeping your care local.
