Hospital Recognizes Lawrence, Welcomes Herlocker-Freeman

Jul 10, 2024

During May’s meeting, William Newton Hospital trustees and administrators honored Diane Lawrence for her years of service as a member of the board of trustees.

“We are grateful for Diane’s ability and willingness to volunteer as a trustee over the last decade,” said William Newton Hospital CEO Brian Barta. “She served the hospital during a period of significant growth while navigating several obstacles such as the COVID-19 pandemic. We thank Diane for her time and insights as a local business leader.”

The five-member volunteer board of trustees at William Newton Hospital is appointed by the Winfield City Commission for five-year terms. Members are selected based on the skills and good judgment that have made them successful in their own professions, as well as a record of community service.

Lawrence, who was appointed in 2014, completed two terms. She served as chair in 2018 and 2019. The Lawrence family owns and operates Winfield Plumbing and Heating, Inc.

Lucy Herlocker-Freeman started her appointment as a William Newton Hospital trustee in June. Herlocker-Freeman resides in Winfield with her husband, optometrist Dan Freeman, OD. The couple have six children and two grandchildren. She has been practicing law since 1986 in Winfield and Wichita and has served as a municipal court judge since January 2022.

Herlocker-Freeman and her family have supported local healthcare for generations. Her father served as a William Newton Hospital trustee for 26 years. During his tenure, he was also a loyal William Newton Healthcare Foundation supporter, serving on the board of directors for 10 years. Herlocker-Freeman is also a supporter of the William Newton Healthcare Foundation and is the current president of the H. L. Snyder Medical Foundation.

“The hospital is a vital part of our community, and its success is important to our city,” said Herlocker-Freeman. “William Newton Hospital has been here for my parents, grandparents, and great-grandparents, and I want to help ensure it’s here for generations to come.”
