Mayfield Raises Funds for SANE, Awareness for Stop Stalking

Mar 18, 2025

Emma Mayfield recently helped collect donations for William Newton Hospital’s SANE program as part of her Stop Stalking pageant platform. Mayfield, 18-year-old Miss South Central KS Teen USA, visited the hospital in Winfield on Monday, bringing necessities for sexual assault survivors including sheets, socks, and undergarments.

The sexual assault nurse examiner (SANE) program is a community-based coordinated response to child and adult victims of sexual assault. SANE offers an enhanced, multidisciplinary response while promoting safety, dignity, and compassion.

SANE nurse Jessica, RN, calls the program a “hidden gem” at William Newton Hospital.

“We’re hoping to grow this unit so that more people within the community know it is available.”

Mayfield's Stop Stalking platform helps push Jodi’s Law nationwide in honor of her aunt Jodi Sanderholm who was murdered by a stalker just two days before Emma was born. The law strengthens the legal definition of stalking while increasing punishment. This donation was given in memory of Sanderholm, whose disappearance and murder occurred in 2007 in Arkansas City.

“William Newton Hospital would like to thank everyone who purchased items from Emma's Amazon wish list in January for National Stalking Awareness Month,” shares Chief Nursing Officer Laura Frazier, BSN, RN.

Miss Sedgwick County USA Taylor Rains joined Mayfield to present the donation. Rains’s platform, centered around survivors of sex trafficking and abuse, helps people “see the other side of trauma and to have dreams and hope.”

Mayfield says the two young women joined forces to raise awareness because their respective platforms sadly “go hand in hand,” explaining that she promotes prevention while Rains focuses on recovery. Rains affirms that the valuable resource provided by William Newton Hospital to sexual assault victims is crucial to helping them feel “seen, safe, and heard.”

If you or someone you know has been the victim of sexual assault, William Newton Hospital advises you to call the hospital main line at 620-221-2300 and ask to speak to the house supervisor or go directly to the emergency room.
