William Newton Hospital Welcomes New Cardiologist

“When we expanded cardiovascular services in 2019, it was our goal to offer life-saving procedures, close-to-home, to the people in our community. With Dr. Beard on board full-time, we can help many patients with cardiovascular disease,” stated William Newton Hospital CEO Ben Quinton.

Board certified in cardiology, Dr. Beard is a Kansas native. He received his medical degree from the KU School of Medicine in 2008. After completing his residency and fellowship, he began practicing in Wichita as an interventional cardiologist in 2015.

“We worked closely with Heartland Cardiology to bring Dr. Beard here to Winfield,” shared Quinton. “His Kansas roots and experience working with rural hospitals made him the perfect fit.”

Dr. Beard will offer office visits and hospital consults. He will also serve as the medical director for the William Newton Hospital cardiac catheterization lab (or “cath lab”), which opened in January 2020.

As an interventional cardiologist, Dr. Beard may perform several procedures in the cath lab. A cardiac cath is done for several reasons including the diagnosis of heart conditions, evaluation of blood flow to the heart muscle, or to open a blockage in the artery. A coronary angioplasty procedure involves the opening of a coronary artery using a balloon. Dr. Beard can also place a stent, a tiny coil or tube placed inside the artery to keep it open.

Patients experiencing these symptoms should seek treatment for a possible cardiac event:

Pressure, tightness, pain, aching sensation in the chest or arms that may spread to your neck, jaw, or back Nausea, indigestion, heartburn, or abdominal pain Shortness of breath Lightheadedness or sudden dizziness Dr. Beard also treats arterial conditions of the arms and legs. A peripheral angiography procedure is also performed in the cath lab to evaluate abnormalities or blockages. The procedure is typically performed on patients who have symptoms associated with peripheral arterial disease (PAD) such as: non-healing wounds, ulcers, pain when walking or climbing stairs, coldness in lower legs or feet, and painful cramping in hips, thighs, and calf muscles. Patients experiencing any of these symptoms should seek treatment for a possible blockage.

All cardiac testing can be done at William Newton Hospital including echocardiograms, stress tests, and lab work. Screening for PAD can also be done at the William Newton Cardiology clinic.
