William Newton Healthcare Foundation believes quality healthcare starts with a strong foundation. It is our mission to support William Newton Hospital and healthcare in the communities we serve.

We have a unique opportunity to chart the course of our local healthcare as our hospital moves into its second century of care. Investing in community healthcare helps to assure no matter what the healthcare system looks like, William Newton is ready to meet the challenge.

Foundation supporters and WNH staff gathered to break ground on the new parking lot project in June 2022, part of a $375,000 anonymous donation that provided a new parking lot, lighting, and a new sign at 6th & Cherry.

WNH and WNHF staff presented a check for over $1,000 raised at the first annual Play for Paramedics Cornhole Tournament to benefit a new paramedic scholarship at Cowley College.

Cupcakes were among the number of sweet treats donated by foundation supporters to provide a 'just because' pick-me-up for WNH staff.

Emma Mayfield, International Junior Miss Kansas Jr. Teen, helped collect over $300 plus in-kind donations for our SANE program as part of her Stop Stalking pageant platform.

WNH employees were named the 2022 Healthcare Hero at the 15th annual WNHF Gala on October 15, presented by Union State Bank. The 2022 gala raised over $76,000 for the hospital.

The most recent Paint Your HeART Out class in May 2022 taught participants about block painting and the effects of natural, healing plants.

After the completion of the new parking lot in November 2022, WNH staff and WNHF supporters gathered to cut the ribbon in front of the new sign.

Dr. Rebekah Ross, Dr. Patrick Bloedel, and Dr. K. Daniel Miller were welcomed to the WNH team of physicians at a meet & greet at Wheat State Wine Co. in September 2022.

2022 winners of the Putting the HeART Back into Healthcare coloring contest were recognized at Art in the Park in October 2022.

After being delayed due to the pandemic, WNH staff hosted a grand opening event for the new surgery center in November 2022. Nearly 100 guests attended the event.

The 2022 Wine-O Trail Run raised $10,000 for William Newton Hospital and saw nearly 400 participants.

The foundation awarded annual mini grants to 30 departments/clinics at William Newton Hospital, totaling over $13,000 to help purchase equipment that will improve patient care and operation.

Hospital & Foundation History

Founded on philanthropy, William Newton Memorial Hospital (WNH) opened its doors in 1927. The 51-bed hospital enjoyed the next 45 years of big hospitals, advances in medicine and physician directed healthcare. Hospitals now operate without the luxury of reserves and in a climate of strict regulation. Healthcare philanthropy fills an important gap for hospitals across the nation. 

As a result of the first ever capital campaign in the history of WNH, the William Newton Healthcare Foundation was formed in 2007. The Foundation provides philanthropic support to advance the mission of William Newton Hospital and enhance the quality of life in our community.

William Newton could not have foreseen the impact of his visionary gift. The simple, unassuming harness maker's legacy lives on today in the faces of our elders & in the heart beat of our children.

William Newton’s Legacy

Photo of William NewtonWilliam Newton, was a simple man. English born and orphaned at a young age, William's virtues of thrift, integrity, and hard work guided him throughout his life. He was a harness maker; a trade learned on the Plains of the Midwest. William opened a saddle and harness shop in Winfield in 1876 with his wife Mary Virginia and, over the course of the next 47 years, acquired considerable means. William & Mary Virginia never had any children.

At the time of his death in 1923, William's Last Will & Testament provided the foundation of his Legacy and the future of healthcare in our community. William Newton gave to the city the remains of his estate to be used for the construction of a public hospital.
